I have 5 of thees wonderful rifles. they all work flawlessly and three of them have been used allot for many years without so much as a hickup I do take very good care of my rifles and clean them often. three of them are 740 .280 cal one 740 30/06 one 742 .308 cal. all the 740s i have were manufactured in the 50s. wouldn't trade them for anything. Chuck.

No. Use them for what they were intended for. Or if you feel you have too many, go ahead and then the herd to get something "different".

The old 740's are often good guns if well cared for. I bought one last year in 30-06 with an old Redfield Bear Cub scope. I shot it when I got it home and it put 4 rounds into one ragged hole at 50 yards. I have shot it a good bit since then and it still hasn't jammed or misfired. The 742 in .308 is another good combination. However, many 742's are now single shots, especially those shot a lot and cleaned little. Parts of the bolts are harder than the receivers and in time they begin to roughly wear the receiver where the bolt slides. If you have a good one, keep it clean and well lubed and save it for hunting only. Get something else for target shooting.

Back in 1959 my dad bought me a 740 and after a couple of years of shooting it quite a bit the receiver did wear out. I then sent it back to Remington for repair. They replaced the worn part where the bolt went for no charge. I do not know today if Remington would do the same repair and if they would charge anything...Back in the late 50's and early 60's there was quite a bit of surplus 30-06 Military ammo around...and I did my fair-share of shooting it. I no longer have the gun...but I do have two older 760's that have the same bolt system and they both shoot fine...just for hunting...I am older and wiser now! :):)

Remington is out of the 740/742 receivers. They will no longer do repairs on this problem. The M760 and 7600 didn't have the same problems as the autoloaders as they were manually operated. A galled receiver didn't usually put them out of action. I use Break-free lube on my 740 and no more than I shoot it, it should outlast me. Of course, that's not such a long time as I was born when Ike was President.
