Whippet ... now there's a brand I have not seen for a while. My first 20 GA was a hammered Whippet ... man, did I even have lot's of fun with that shot gun. Sure wish I had it around now.

ANDERSK, have any idea where a guy could come up with some info on this pup? I understand they were really popular, too!

First, let's differentiate between "Whippet" as a brand and 'whippet' as a type of gun. Whippet guns, as a type, are characterized by short barrels and cut down pistol grips, generally double shotguns although some single-shot and pumps were made into this style. No doubt they got the name from being 'quick as a whippet' (the dog). Popular among Prohibition-era ganster types and 'Untouchable' types both.

"Whippet" (the brand) was used by the HD Folsom company on guns made for the hardware chain Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett. Folsom and Savage did a lot of business c.1930 and its certainly plausible that the Whippet brandname may have been conferred to Savage.

I have had occasion to look over a couple of examples of this rifle, and it appears to be a Savage Model 3. The use of the name 'Whippet' would induce me to put manufacture during the early 1930's, certainly not later than 1940.

Thanks brodie, for asking about the 'Whippet' ... I'm not much in the know. I just kind of like stiing around reflecting on earlier days. Mine was a 'Whippet' 20 GA single shot ... but that is all it took in those days. I used to be a good shot!
