Good solid 1911 for less then $1200

In the market for a solid, lightweight, very reliable 1911. I am leaning towards the Kimber Pro CDP. Do any of you have any reserves purchasing a Kimber say over a Colt 1911? I am not very familiar with the different 1911's on the market, but I have tried the Kimber and really liked the feel, size and compactness of the Kimber. Unfortunately I do not have any other experiences with other 1911's on the market to make a comparison. If anyone could help me with finding the right 1911 based on their comparative experiences that would be great. Ultimately would this be a good purchase for a $1000 to $1200 range.

The Kimber Custom II is a very decent gun.

Do you think Kimber is worth the extra money in comparison to say a Sig Revolution or should I look at some other brands before honing in on the Kimber line?

I know nothing about the Sig Revolution, and you need to understand that I am a disciple of John Moses Browning (the inventor, creator, and father of the Colt Model 1911). If JMB did not invent it, it is not worth owning! The Kimber Custom II is a 1911A1 clone which is why I like it.

Kimber has seen better days in their quality in my honest opinion.

I would suggest looking into a Springfield, Colt, or S&W.

However, the Sig is a good gun. It just does not always fit holsters very well.

STI also has a pretty good lineup you might want to look at.

I just purchased a Taurus PT 92 (Beretta style) 9mm. While I was researching the history and getting opinions I came across their .45 cal 1911. The price was competitive and the gun had gotten very good reviews. I'm not a .45 shooter so I didn't go very deep into reseaching the gun.
Just something you might want to look into.

In the $1200 price range I would take a serious look
    at the Detonics products.

Hello as always opinions will be all over the place, and most of them are valid. However one thing is missing from most. To some people it means a great deal and others it means very little if any and that my Friends is Value down the road and quality of the Item. This leaves me to the point that in My opinion you can't go wrong with either a Government model or a Gold Cup in a Series 70 COLT the company that has made more 1911's then any other [^]

I have several 1911's in 38 Super, 45acp, 22conv ,and 9mm. They are Colts, Kimber, Springfield, RIA,and S&W. I obviously prefer the Browning 1911 design first and the caliber secondary. I plan on getting a Taurus 1911 in 45, I only wish I could find it in 38 Super. They are all good guns, all the same design but some built with more quality control. I keep it simple,a customized $2-3K gun is not my idea of fun.

I sense that you tend to favor the Kimber and I can say the Custom II is one of my favorites. I dont think much of the factory supplied mag that came with it. (replaced w/Wilson). I prefer it over the others. The Taurus looks interesting and hopefully wont be disappointing.

Unless its a 70 series colt, go Kimber.

Maby its just me but I have bought many of my guns used and gotten greater satisfaction of not only having a gun that is new or in new condition but I work until I find what I think is a Deal. Right now in my neck of the woods people are hurting. especially if you are in construction. There are deals to be had everywhere. I have seen and been offered Colt 1911's around 500.00 price point. Check out the local gun shows. The Stuff on the tables will probably not be the deal you are looking for but the people walking around might have what you are looking for. Tell people you trust locally that you would be in the market to buy. As they hear of people liquidating they will pass them along to you. I know it sounds like a real estate infomercial but it works with guns as well.

I have a 4" Kimber CDP Pro that I purchased 5 years ago. It is a great pistol. Mine is the earlier model without the current safety system. I have changed the barrel to a Wilson for better accuracy. No problem with it. It feeds everything.

I've been shooting a Taurus PT 1911 for a couple of years now and wouldn't even consider getting rid of it. For about $600 my taurus gives me 1" groups @ 25 yards. I shoot an action pistol league, and put about 150-200 rounds through mine every week. Just thought I would toss my .02 in.
