Gents:

I have a number of old colt and S&W revolvers that while great collector items, are really worn to the point of being just fun shooters. I'm one of those guys that wishes he could go back in time and get a "new" shooting example of the great old revolvers, so my plans are to have these old war horses restored to their original glory and go shoot the heck out of them and have some fun while I can still draw breath!

Here's the question; anyone know of a competent Smith that can work and restore these old revolvers back to their original configuration? Thanks boys!

I would check out my local gun stores and see if there is anybody they would recomend. In NC re bluing is around 100 for hot blue they do a great job but if you are going to keep shooting why bother.

Probably one of the Best, and that is local to me, and I have seen his work is Doug Turnbull in Bloomfield, NY.

His operation is topshelf with Winchester and Colt stuff, and I believe he has a full service shop that does S&W also. When S&W came out with their Heritage series revolvers that were color case hardened framed, Doug don all the case hardening for them. He done stuff for winchester, TC, and others.

If you want to really restore to "original configuration" as in 'like new' you should expect to do $2000 to $4000 per gun. There are people who do it and do it well but you get what you pay for - maybe said the other way -- you pay for what you get.

Often you can find an original gun of the same kind in real nice conditon for a lot less money - or modern new reproduction guns for some kinds in the few to several hundred dollar range.

If you just want to have a gun repaired/refinished to work right and look nice, a price range of $250 plus or minus might be right, depending on how, who, what, etc.

As always, thanks for the info Gents! I have heard of Turnbull, and suspect I'll start there.
