I just got a sig 556 pistol and wanted to know if it is legal to put a folding stock and a vertical grip on it?

YES it is legal IF your STATE allows it AND you do all the proper paperwork to make it a SBR (short barreled rifle). You need to find out if you state allows SBR, if so then you need to fill out a ATF Form 1 (making an NFA item).

You will fill out the Form 1 which is about like the 4473 that is done when you buy a gun from an FFL. You then either get a CLEO sign and finger prints and passport photos OR you form a trust and fill it out with that info. You then send Form 1 with whichever set of paper work you do and $200 to the ATF. You then wait, about 4-6 weeks is the current turn around, for the Form 1 to come back APPROVED. Once you have that you can build away.

Putting a stock on without doing this and then getting caught is a NFA violation which is a Federal issue that has a $250,000 fine and 20 year jail time.

Do a web search on NFA and start reading up on it. This will get you started http://www.atf.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/nfa.htm

Assuming you live in the USA, this isn't legal unless you do a lot of paperwork first.

The paperwork is the SAME no matter where you go as it is FEDERAL. It is not that hard but the first time seems intimidating. Dont let people scare you off by saying "lots of paperwork", it is no harder then filling out a 4473 twice. The HARDEST part is waiting for the paperwork to come back. Here is the ACTUAL Form 1, it is 4 pages and over 2 of them are instruction, http://www.texassmallarmsresearch.com/Info/Forms/Form1-07312007.pdf

I do not know your state laws but here is a link to ALL of the state laws, http://www.atf.gov/firearms/statelaws/ . You should read and KNOW these if you own ANY firearm.
