Well I finally got my Mosin. What a christmas presant. It is my first rifle and actually my first weapon. I know, IT'S not a high dollar item but it's still my first. It was made in 1941 and at the Izhevsk arsenal. It has matching numbers on it so i know it's not a thrown together gun. the rifling look's decent with no pitting on it. I forgot to mention it's a 91/30. Next will be an M44. does anyone have a Mosin made at this arsonal and the same year? If so let me know how it shoot's. Cant wait to go shootin!!!

    Merry Christmas!
    What a great Christmas present.
You have one of the great all time military rifles.
Now, we need a range report.

congrats on your entry into suplus military[:D] instead of the m44 i would recommend the 38 due to not having the issue of the fixed bayonet..also try out the light ball ammo 1st before you move up to the heavy...dont want to get you scared off too quick on surplus rifles[:D],,remember that all mil surplus ammo will be corrosive...dunhams sells some and i have had split cases on a few (heavy ball)of the rounds but they still extracted just fine

Thank you. My girl friend bought me 20 round's of Silver Bear 203 grain Bimetal SP to go with it. Just need to find somewhere to shoot now. By the way, the 38 is the finn model correct?

Take a stroll over to surplusrifle.com, some good info on the M-N, including "sticky bolt" syndrome, and improving trigger pull. Congrats on your first!

Merry Christmas and congratulations! I can't say where my Mosin was built but it shoots in the 4-5" neighborhood.

My one word of advice: Get your C & R license. Well another word: Don't buy too many of the darn things. Around 75 bucks at SOG, delivered to your door. I've had to start giveing them away to make room for more. Tom

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

My dad told me the best thing to do was strip the gun down and clean all the metal part's with a solvent like acetone to get rid of all the cosmoline so it dosen't get all gummed up when you shoot it. I guess it was purchased at Dunhams. Im not sure if they check the head space or anything for that matter. is there a danger of shooting it if it has not been checked? By the way. thank you all for the congrat's. merry christmas everyone!!!!

There have been BUNCHES of these that have been "re-arsenaled" by the Commies- they ran them thru a depot level rebuild, refinished (very nicely IMHO) and put them away in their emergency war stocks. Headspace, throat and muzzle wear seemed to have been checked/ adjusted on those- and there is very little cosmoline to remove. However, once again, surplusrifle.com has a good piece on removing cosmoline. DO use a brush, solvent, and clean the CHAMBER really well- I use a cordless drill to spin the brush. Dried cosmoline coating the chamber walls makes it hell to remove a fired case. If SN on bolt and rifle match, should be OK. If different numbers, would get a smith to check headspace before shooting.

I believe the M38 is Russkie.
The Finnish is the M39, the M28, the M28-30, to name a few.
Since you mention Finns, you might want to move up to a Finn for your next one. I have a M39, many regard it as the best Mosin Nagant ever made. Adjustable front sight and barrels by Sako, Valmet or Tikka.
