410 Use?

Does anyone know what the use of the 410 is? I inherited a bolt action 410 JC Higgins several years ago with some very old ammo. Granted maby because the ammo was old it was the culprit but the few things I have shot with it more or less had to be shot multiple times to kill.

Did they, Do they make 410 slugs that work for deer?

Does anyone have an idea about value the gun is probably metal 100% Stock 85-90%

Thanks

I regularly shoot pheasant and chuckar pen raised birds with one shot kills, # 4 or 6 for the pheasant, 7 1/2 for chuckars. They make 410 slugs in both 2 1/2 and 3 inch, Will kill a deer at 50 yds or under but chances are they don't drop right away, expect a chase like you would with an arrow, maybe less

The 410 is good for lots of things, but is illegal in some states to shoot deer with when your using the available slugs.....
A 3 inch 410 loaded with #6's is not something you want to be shot at with.........
They will need to post good photo's to find a realistic value to it.......

I appreciate your input. This thing sits alot because I just have not been satisfied with the lethality of the round itself. I just wanted someone else to say if I should try something else.

410 makes a very good squirll gun
for when your eyes get old and that
rifle gets hard to see. Also makes
a good tune up gun, start shooting
doves with it, and by the time duck
season gets here you cant miss with
    a 12 ga.

I've had every kid I know started off with a 410 when they wanted to start shooting clay birds.
Back in the old days I hunted a lot of jump shot ducks with a Winchester 101 in 410..
That was another stupid thing I did, sell the gun not shoot ducks with it[:D]

There was a time when .410 shells were far cheaper than others. I quit reloading them when I found a place that sold them for $1.25/box if you bought a case.
As sales declined the price increased & as the price increased the sales declined. Unless you reload it is hard to justify them now & I have never been able to get the crimp to hold on the plastic shells.
I'm a great fan of the .410 but I can't afford to shoot mine very much anymore.

The new HS Winchester hulls crimp like a dream, the 13 y/o girl loads her own on a 600 jr with WW-296. She can usually go 20 birds with it and a hand thrower.....

I have used a .410 double for upland game for more than 50 years. Its shot leaves the barrel with the same velocity as a 12 or 20. It has a much smaller pattern, but as long as your target is in the middle of it, it kills pheasants and ruffed grouse just as dead.

I have shot many wild pheasant dead with a 410. The going straight away shot is a hard kill though. Have a Rem. 1100 410 that I shoot sporting clays with sometimes. Makes it a challenge.

    I slaughtered doves this year with my .410 O/U. 3" no 8's work very well. A 3" no.8 410 has as many pellets as a 2 3/4 12 gauge with no. 6 shot.
