I want to buy a rifle: Don't know where to start

Whuddup people. So recently i've been getting into rifles & hunting and such. So, since i'm 18 now, i've been wondering whats the best way to go about getting a rifle? I've read some stuff on the laws, but i'm still really lost as to what the proper way of purchasing one would be considering theres all this red tape to go through. I really want to get a Mosin-Nagant, or SKS (because they're so cheap), but i dont know what the deal is cause i live in MA, so i know we have some pretty restrictive gun laws here. So, if anyone has any info that could help me out, please share it.
Thanks guys, peace.

best bet,go talk to a local dealer and they should be able to walk you through the process, some of your laws vary county to county

If it's legal in your area, I recommend the SKS. They're solid, dependable, and the ammo is fairly cheap.

+1 on Kumate suggestion- find a local dealer, who will knw your local laws, and can give you some advice. If the first dealer you try is a jerk (and don't stop in on a Saturday morning when they are up to eyeballs in customers) then find another dealer.

For a first rifle, would suggest a USED 22. They are inexpensive, ammo is cheap, and are a great tool for learning. The Moisin-Nagants are also cheap, ammo is (for now, anyway) cheap, they are simple, and have enuff power to anchor anything you are likely to fin in your home state. The SKS is using a much less powerful cartridge, but they are still fun rifles to fool with.

And welcome to the ranks of citizens-

My first suggestion is to get the hell out of Mass. ASAP! Go west young man. The people in these dense eastern population centers are going to eat each other alive if the economy collapses. (depression) Get a used bolt action .22, something for less than $100 and a Mosin Nagant M38, with Czech or Polish silver tip ammo. It's good for hunting in the woods or defending your home and will kill anything on 4 legs or 2 in north america.

whuddup yo [:D][:D] if your gonna get a mosin nagant ,you also may wanna learn about the ammo ,because a lot of the surplus military stuff is corrosive , and your gun will have to be cleaned every time you shoot it ,about the only corrosive ammo in 7 .62x 39 (which is the sks caliber) comes from yugoslavia ,i would look for an gunshop commando to teach you about corrosive ammo

I'd suggest an NRA Hunter Safety Course first off...Then go to Your favorite Gun Store and talk with the Proprietor...

Sweet, thanks guys. I'll have to hit up a gunshop owner sometime soon then, It sucks, they're all out west around here. .22's are nice, but Mosins where its at for me. I got to hold one of those in real life at an airsoft game once, (dont worry, we wernt using it, it was a WWII demo) and it was the perfect rifle, without being to big of a rifle. No wonder Russia kicked Germany's * with it, its just an old-school Russian hunting rifle.

And if the world does ever go to poop atleat i'll have something rather than nothing <----the true american in me [:D], jus playin. Thx people!
