458 Win to 458 Lott

I found a real nice Ruger #1, in 458 Winchester. I wish it was in 458 Lott. The case rim and base are the same dimensions. Is it possible and safe to ream it to 458 Lott?? Is there that much performance difference??

It is an easy and safe conversion when done by a qualified gunsmith. The results are worth it if you are going after dangerous game. Otherwise, I'd leave it alone. If you have it converted to 458 Lott, you can still shoot 458 Win Magnum ammo.

    haroldchrismeyer,

"Is it possible and safe to ream it to 458 Lott??"

Not only is it possible and safe but it's still a very popular conversion.

"Is there that much performance difference??"

Yes, enough so that people still want it done and PHs ask for this work specifically.

    Best.

I thought it would be, but I thought I better ask. I did find out that the #1 is now made in that caliber. Thanks for the reply, I will go tomorrow and see if I can get it for a decent price.

    haroldchrismeyer,

PH is short for Professional Hunter. These are the folks that guide hunters around for a living in Africa and other countries. They carry a rifle chambered for a suitably heavy cartridge/bullet combination to handle any problems that may come up during a hunt. They also act as a necessary back up for the hunter(s). With the exception of the rimmed cartridges used in the classic double rifles, the .458 Lott is frequently requested as a chamber for bolt action rifles.

    Best.
