COMMERCIAL 30 M1 CARBINE QUESTION

Is Iver Johnson M1 same as Plainfield ??
Of the four that I know of: Iver Johnson, Plainfield, Universal, and Auto Ordinance. Which would be the best buy to worse, 1-4 given that they were in the same overall condition??
Thanks in advance for your help, Bill

To answer your question directly, I'd say IJ -> Plainfield -> Universal; Kahr hasn't enough history, but there have been significant problems reported.

But, why would you deliberately go out & buy a reproduction carbine, when USGI carbines are relatively easy to find, & don't cost much more? And, there is no question as to their quality. You can still buy a USGI carbine from the US government - www.odcmp.com . Or, check out the offerings on the GB auction side; there are lots of them listed.

Iver Johnson, Plainfield, and the MIL SPEC Universal with one recoil spring are viable guns. They used many GI parts. I have a Plainfield that is 100% with any ammo, even steel cased Wolf.

The Auto Ord seems to be a good shooter, perhaps a bit rough around the edges sometimes, but a good shooter.

All of these are good for the person who really wants a high volume shooter and who doesn't want o beat up a piece of history.
