Gas Escape Hole on 1903 Springfied Receiver

I just picked up a high number (357,000 range)Rock Island 1903 Springfield receiver. The left side of the receiver, about 1" from the front, has a 3/16" diameter gas escape hole that looks like it was drilled some time after the gun left the factory. I seem to recall that this was done to some early 1903 receivers, but I'm not sure. Can any of the experts enlighten me on this? Thanksin advance.

    Sam,
Don't know if this helps any, but for what it's worth my Mark I, serial number 1,160,+++ has no hole on the left side, but does have one a bit more than 5/8" to rear from barrel/receiver junction on the right.

Known as a "Hatcher hole", it is found in most Springfields. It allows gas to vent in the event of a ruptured case.
