Smith & Wesson 28-2 .357 Question

I have a S&W 28-2 Nickle finish .357 Magnum, 5 1/2" barrel, sn N41xxx. The gun also has another number stamped on the cylinder hinge, 5C670 - SG1. The hammer and trigger are Jeweled. I need to know history and approximate value. I believe the gun to be rare and maybe a salesman sample.

According to the S & W Book, if your serial number has (4) X's not (3)? It would date to the mid 70's.

As the Model 28 was the plain vanilla=economy version of the Model 27, it's very very unlikely that it left S & W, nickel plated with "jeweled"/engine turned parts.

If the work that has been done to it, i.e.(fixing it up cosmetically). Isn't factory original? It would have a very negative on collector demand/value, i.e.(only value would be as a prettyuped shooter). My 2?.

Model 28's were not factory nickeled and the jeweled trigger and hammer would be done after it left the factory also.

There are only 5 known "satin" nickeled guns made for Adolph Blaick Inc as sales samples.

The serial number listed would be in the early 70's, probably 1970 or 71. How many numbers are there after the "N"?

They did not make the model 28 with 5 1/2" barrels, they were 4" or 6". Measurements are taken from the muzzle end to where the rear of the barrel and cylinder come together.... not to where the barrel enters the front of the frame.

I agree with rufe-snow, you probably have a 28 that someone refinished and prettied- up with the jeweling of the hammer and trigger.

Thank You all for your response. The pistol only has 3 digets after the N41. The gun shows no signs of being nickle plated after manufacture. All of the stamped numbers are clear and crisp and all of the machined edges are extremely sharp with no signs of nickle flash that would have been left on a replate job. I firmly believe that the pistol is an original nickle plated gun from the factory. I know that this is not suposed to be but stranger things have happened. I guess I'll have to come off the money and call S&W so they can research it for me. Thanks
