.22 bolt action rifle

I'm planning on buying my son a .22lr rifle. He has narrowed it down to a bolt action. I've looked at several ones and am unsure of what one to buy. I would like to keep the price under $350. Any suggestions as to which rifle delivers the best performance etc?

Marlin 81TS fits your bill and you'll love it clip fed nice beginers rifle. about $250 in last years gun digest check the gun shops for a used one

look around you can pick up a good used one. for real cheap i am sure. bolt actions are a great starter .22

I second the Marlin. You'll be amazed at how accurate it is for how little money you had to spend.

You did mot mention age or size of son. If he is a teen or adult, the Marlin 81 series is a really good buy for what you get. If he is a youngster, there was the Youth Mdl marlin (I believe it was a 15Y- scaled down to fit a youngster- single shot bolt- great first rifle, and IT FITS LITTLE FOLKS.

CZ 452 has a cheap birch stocked model that is awesome! comes with a test target I bought 2 @189!
marlins are fine
search the auctions for a used one nice older one too!

I prefer a Marlin for accuracy and small game hunting, but the links on the really nice old Remington and/or the CZ seem mighty good to me too. Like 11b6r mentioned, though, the age and size of your son might be a consideration.

My choices would be one of the remington series in the 580, 581 or 582 line (discontinued, but can find online now and then ) or a ruger 77/22

GREAT questions - Not a good idea to take a light rifle to a Competition, nor is it easy to drag a 3 postition rifle through the woods hunting small game
