I haven't fired this yet (NICS delay) but the receiving dealer said he thought screws over the chamber was an unsafe practice.

Would you fire it?

It would depend on how deep the holes are and What kind of rifle /22 Long Rifle rim fire or high pressure Centerfire.

Darn good point - this is a 44 mag Ruger.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

It would depend on how deep the holes are and What kind of rifle /22 Long Rifle rim fire or high pressure Centerfire.EDIT EDIT Wow I can't for the life of me figure why any one would drill holes in this barrel when the action /receiver is factory drilled. If this is a newly purchased item and you did not know about the extra holes I would ask /demand my money back.EDIT AGAIN Thanks SNOW & GSKYHAWK Never had a Ruger 44 mag Carbine.[:I] Just seemed to be a strange place for 2 screws . I would have thought it would have been easier to use the two large screw holes on the receiver and had longer screws to mount a scope. [:0]

The Ruger 44 Carbine was drilled and tapped on the barrel at the factory.

There are four holes drilled in the top of the receiver; however, the forward two ARE NOT for scope mounting, they hold the cartridge guide plate in place.

perry shooter thats the way all the old Ruger carbines where made , those holes are factory and i've never heard of one blowing up yet ,

Henry if you are worried about shooting it , just send it to me and i'll try her out for a few years just too make sure its safe for you

i figure 10-15 years should be long enought to put your mind at ease that its a safe gun after that you could enjoy the rifle knowing full well that it had been put thru the mill and came out fine [:D][:D][;)]

I wouldn't have thought much about it except that the receiving dealer told me this was after-market and in his opinion, unsafe.

It seems llike the receiving dealer should study up a little more before stateing falsehoods.
Besides if the holes are not any deeper than the dovetail sight cutout, what's the problem ?

You made me look. The .44 simi autos may be that way but my ninety-six
lever action .44 is not, but then the scope attachment on top of the reciever is also different.

You guys made me dig mine out of the back of one of my old safes, and it has the same screws in the same place. I don't play with mine much, a pain in the butt to load and unload.

If not standard threaded holes, the spacing and blue wear suggest a target scope block was mounted there.

They are easy to unload. Just pull the trigger.
