I want to buy my husband a semi automatic pistol for Christmas. He wants something he can hunt with. What should I buy?

Well I would recommend something in 10mm such as the EAA Witness, Glock 20, or S&W 10 series(used). The power of the 357 Magnum in a semi auto.

My other suggestion would be something in the 40 S&W caliber. However there are so many good pistols in that caliber, its hard to recommend one. Some include Glock, Beretta, Springfield Armory, Walther(personal fav), Steyr, EAA Witness, and CZ.

Whatever you do, you should find out what kind of gun fits his hands first. Some like wide grips, some slim.

If he is going to hunt deer or similer animals with it there are usually cartridge restrictions and it makes it hard to use a semiautomatic. The minimum cartridge we can use here in Indiana is 357 mag. We can use a 10mm, a 9mm is to small. In these larger calibers a revolver is usually best, and a lot less expensive although you can buy 357 mag or 44 mag semiautomatics.

However if he is going to hunt small game with it such as squirrels then there are plenty of semiautomatic options. I would recomend a 22 long rifle for caliber and a Ruger or Browning for the brands. Get at least a 6 inch barrel and buy one with a good set of target sights. You can do some searches here on gunbroker to get an idea of the cost.

If he has a friend he hunts or shoots with, that you can trust, ask them if they can find out what he needs and what he would like.

    Good luck,

    Scout

Does he know you're planning to do this, or will it be a surprise?
There are so many possibilities; caliber, make, model, etc. that you may want to get him a "gift certificate" and then let him pick out his own weapon.
Maybe wrap up a packet of targets, or ear muffs, or something like that, along with a blank check for the handgun itself???
    Good luck.

p.s. That's one lucky man you've got there!

I think RCrosby has a valid point along with the fact that IMHO the paperwork should go with the person that has the pistol .And most dealers WILL NOT give full refund/exchange on firearms because the BATFE records will show it was sold once .

    Ms. Ruby,
You can't go wrong with a Glock 20. They are relatively inexpensive ($550-600) and are very accurate. As well, the Glock is nearly impervious to the elements, i.e. rust, sand, etc. As for the 'straw sale' situation, you can buy the G20 and give it as a gift to ANY ONE.
And I know he'll be EXTRA GREATFUL to you for such a wonderful present!

With no more information than we have here, I would have to suggest a T/C Encore with barrels in; deer, 7mm-08: small game, 22 lr: varmits, 204 ruger: elk/moose, 30-06.

Also if it is for deer/hogs, I would highly recommend a Ruger Super Blackhawk. The ability to hold the trigger back and cock the hammer silently is great in the thick southern woods when a deer can sneak right up on you before you know he's around.

I would agree with the T/C but you need to know if he is hunting deer. Indiana has changed the laws regarding calibers alowed this year.

I personally like the Gift Certificate idea. My GF has done this for me twice (yes I finally am with a woman who bought me a gun!!) She prefers that I pick something that I want...and since the amount is set, should I want something more expensive I just kick in a few bucks!!

I agree, he is a lucky guy.
