What the Hell is this?

At the range today I was shooting a pair of Ruger #1s. One was an A1 in .243 and the other was a .458 Tropical. When I was nearly done shooting the second gun (the 458) I noticed this pin laying on the towel I used to cover the bench. It must have come from something I was using but I can't figure out where it came from.

I looked at an exploded parts view for the #1 and there are several pins but nothing appeared missing from either rifle (as best I could tell by an external examination) and they both continued to function perfectly.

Anyone familiar with the #1 recognize this pin? Are there any such pins used in the action that could simply fall out on the bench?

if both functioned as they should, no visible holes from which it fell, odds are it flew from somewhere else !

I am not all that familiar with this firearm but it might be an ejector cam pivot pin. I am going by a parts list from my Ruger dealers manual, item #S-45. Appears that you would find this near the front of the breech block under the firearm. Just a wild guess.

I just pulled the forearm off a #1 here in the shop and that pin is just 1" long. How on earth it would come out of position and a firearm would continue to function is beyond me and I will bet it did not come from your rifle unless you removed the forearm.

No disassembly was undertaken on either rifle at the bench. If it came from one of the guns it had to have fallen completely free without removing anything. I cannot imagine anything doing that.

It occurred to me that I was using a spotting scope on a tripod today and perhaps this pin came from it? Might be from a hinge on one of the legs, maybe? I didn't notice anything wrong with the scope as I packed it up but I'll go give it a closer look and see if this pin may have fallen from it.

Decapping pin from a die? Needle bearing?

No radiusing of the edges on the pin...makes me think it's not a decapping pin. Seems kinda light for anything crucial in the Ruger as they are nothing if not robust/overbuilt. I have come home with so much other stuff like that over the years I guess I have become a bit jaded. Came home with my neigboring bench mates (total stranger) model 2003 Mauser sporting rifle with the 375 H&H barrel on it and Swarovski scope instead of my Winchester 70 .225. Needless to say when I left the range I took my case and drove home (1 1/2 hours)without thinking much about it until later when going to clean my rifle and viola, a $3000 mauser. I called back to the range and the owner had called back in fairly having a nervous breakdown about his loss and wondering if anyone knew where it was. I got his number and we met that night to exchange guns. The part that surprises me a little is that he was so surprised to get it back...I guess there aren't that many fun people in the world anymore.

On that schematic you have; are there not roll pins in the front of the mechanism? I can't tell from my crappy exploded view, but they might be rolls and might not. Sorry to not be of much help, but this kind of junk shows up for me all the time seemingly. I have a nice collection of mystery screws and sight sliders and scope caps etc. No idea where ANY of them came from and what they are for...just sorta showed up!

You know, looking at it in person (hard to tell in photo) it does look for all the world like a decapping pin! I wonder if a pin got lost in a case (wouldn't it shoot out the barrel when fired though?) during loading?

I'll compare it to a decapping pin tomorrow but that may be what it is.

    I'll let you know.
