Building an RPK (AK-47 variant)...how hard is it?

Recently, I've found myself wanting one of these beauties, especially since buying the whole thing is impossible in CA.

But, exactly how difficult would it be to buy one? Gunbroker auctions already have both parts kit and 100% receivers for a Yugo M72 RPK. Is this basically it, all the parts needed to complete it? And is it any different from an AK-47? I know there are a lot of guides out there for AK-47 builds, so can that information also be applied to building an RPK?

Unfortunately you being a resident of commiefornia. You best make sure you got all your ducks in a row, prior to ordering a serial numbered AK receiver from anybody, i.e. specially with the 01 FFL who has to transfer it to you. To the best of my knowledge, as far as the Cali DOJ is concerned, the stripped receiver is a AK.

You definitely don't want the Cali JBT's kicking in your front door at 5 AM, some cold morning in Dec. over something like this.

Do you have an AK you are wanting to convert?

I've heard of people shaving the bulged trunnion to make it fit into a standard AK receiver ... other than that its not any different from building any other AK

I built mine on a NoDak receiver I ordered with the custom serial number that matches my kit ...

I'm not from CA so take this with a grain of salt. I have read on
www.ar15.com of Californians building their own ak's. Something about being able to register them once the are added to the ban list. Best bet would be to sign up there and see what's is involved legally for your state. They have a section there called Hometown forums by state. May want to check out the California board.

Most likely you'll need to bend your own receiver and that adds some additional cost to the build in that now you'll need a spot welder and bending jig.

Building a RPK is like building any other ak.
