I been wanting a revolver for a while and doing some research Taurus makes some decent revolvers looked at some at my local gun shop ant they look good, it sound kind of interesting the 22 magnum, I want something fun to shoot but at the same time not to expensive and generaly 22 is not that expensive I know 22lr is cheap to shoot so how expensive is 22magnum?
I buy most of my ammo from walmart I think I seen prices but Im not 100% sure, also when it comes to recoil what wuold you compare to?
and the particular gun Im looking into is the model 971 has a 6.5" barrel and mostly is going to be target shooting so I would think the longer the barrel more acurate, opinions, sugestions?

Is there a current manufacturer for a .22 magnum auto? Is the AutoMag ll 22 magnum durable? Are ther parts available? Should I bid on an Automag ll 22 magnum? In the meantime I purchased a Taurus 941 5" and a Ruger Contenter SS Slab side. Did I do OK?

I want a .22 magnum, my wife says I dont ned any more guns, but regardless I'm getting one. Whats the best choice for the money?? I've thought about the Winchester 9422, Ruger 10/22, or the Remington 597. Looks I like the Remington, but I hear it jams a lot. Money I like the Remington also. Remington says they fixed the problem, but two dealers told me they didn't. HELP!!

My favorite squirrel gun is a 22 mag over 410 combination gun. The magnum is not too powerful at all. If you wanted to stick with a Marlin rifle, the 25MN is a dandy bolt action 22 mag that I can highly recommend. OTOH if your Glenfield is doing the job for you why not stick with the less expensive 22 LR ammo?
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

I have thought about buying a .22 Mag over the years but decided against it simply because the ammo is so much more expensive than LR ammo.

Your .22 LR is just fine for squirrels, rabbits and other small size game. The magnum is flatter shooting and obviously more powerful but if long rifles are doing the job, why change.

I had the same thoughts a Laredo Lefty until I fell into a Marlin 882SS 22 mag. Nice gun and with a Jard trigger it is sweet to shoot. I also have a 10-22 mag that I fixed up and I really like shooting them both. I do shoot my 22LR guns more because it is cheaper. But I am glad I have my 22 mags.

Out here on the left coast we shoot digger squirrels, kinda like a gopher/gray digger, anyway they're on the ground, not in trees. I bought a Ruger model 77 in 22mag when they first came out, and have never looked back. With good ammo(the key) it will shoot 3/4" at 100yds all day every day. It's a good coyote gun out to 100yds if you can get a good shot. Since the 17HMR came out 22mag ammo has improved, better bullet selection and higher velocity. Better bullets are the the big difference, Remington 33gr V-max are real good, and so are CCI MAXI-MAG with Speer TNT HP. The rounds are spendy, I just paid $10.50 for a box of CCIs at Sportsmans Wharehouse in Vancouver. I think the range and knockdown are worth the differance in price over the 22 LR.
    For what it's worth.

I'm with BHAVIN on the 882SS, and find it to be a fine little gun. I've added a bipod and sling to mine, and can carry it all day if necessary.

My gun also agrees with CapnMidnight's as to ammo, with the Remington 33 grain shell giving the best performance, while the 30 grain CCI Hyper-Velocity gives slightly greater velocity. And both of those particular brands sell at way too high a price, in the 13 dollar (for fifty shells) range.

I can see using a .22 magnum for the type of squirrel hunting that CapnMidnight has mentioned, however, if you are talking about putting squirrel on the menu, then a .22 short, long, or long rifle cartridge would be more than suitable.
    What's next?

I chose a bolt 22 mag instead of a semi 22lr... wanted the 200 yard range on clay pigeons. (Savage 93fv with accutrigger, heavy barrel, etc. - I really need a better scope for it tho)

One thing to remember about 22wmr vs. 22lr is that the LR is not a true .224 like 223, 22-250, etc. are but rather 221ish, and with a heeled bullet. 22wmr is .224 and crimped in the case just like a 223, etc. Also the bullets are of better design (jacketed, etc. instead of plated).

But like you said ammo is more... which is why I got the bolt gun instead of a semi 22mag :)

A 22Mag will work for every thing from squirrels to deer if the shot is placed right. You want an accurate gun, and apply the type of ammo needed to the task at hand. If you are looking to make some squirrel stew and biscuts, then use a solid point. My favorate round is the Winchester Supreme 34 grain JACKETED hollow point. It is extremely accurate, and works well on head shots for everythng one wants to put on the dinner table.

A .22 magnum won't be to "powerful" but may be more than is needed for hunting tree type squirrels. As I get older, I think more about getting back to basics. A .22LR will do most everything a hunter needs for small game like squirrels and rabbits. Having said that, I have and use a couple of .22 mags. We are blessed with more options than really makes economic sense. I have at least 20 rifles (centerfire and rim fire) and could really get by with owning just 2 if I was practical, a bolt action .22 LR and a BAR 30-06. It is nice we have options and don't have to be practical!
