CLASS 3 LICENSE

I live in MI, have a C&R license as well as a carry permit.

What do I need to do to obtain a class 3 license? Must I have a FFL first?

I have called the ATF, emailed the ATF and written the ATF [three weeks ago] with no answers.

"Do to their work load, it may take several days for a return phone call" to any messages left on a recorder. Note the " marks. No return call after three messages.

Any ideas?

I have a MI CCW license along with a C&R license. I am thinking about applying for a class 3 license. Anyone have an idea as to a web site for the information and or the cost and time to allow?
Any and all information / comments would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You do not want a Class 3 license; that is something required to have a business buying & selling Class 3 firearms.

Check the information on this site:

    http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/nfa/index.htm

That should answer most of your questions. Where you live - city, county, AND state - determines what you can possess. For that, you can check with a Class 3 dealer in your state; you're going to have to deal with him anyway, as that is pretty much the only way that you can acquire a Class 3 firearm. (The only exception would be Class 3 Curios & Relics.)

Well there are 2 different things. One is the Class 3 license which is for dealers and it cost lots of money, you have to have a FFL which requires a business and lots of rules.

If you are just looking to buy NFA items it is not that bad other then the price of Full auto guns. I am not sure about your state laws but by federal laws here is the scoop. To buy NFA guns you will need to find a in state Class 3 dealer for the transfer. Once you find the item you would like to buy you pay for it, then fill out the Form 4, get finger prints, passport photos, and a LEO sign off (there are other ways now), send Form 4 and $200 check to the ATF, wait about 4-6 weeks, Form 4 comes back and you pick up your item with a big smile.

As for storage I would suggest locking it up well but the ATF says that no one else can have access to the item. That could mean a cable lock hooked to something for say a rifle, or a small fire safe for a suppressor or pistol sized item. I have my stuff locked up in my gun room and I have the only key. Others are allowed to use and handle your items as long as you are there and "in control" of your items.

UPDATE: Here is a good read for you. I found it and just skimmed it but it seemed to be in line, http://www.gunjunkie.net/tech-center/legal-information/nfa-firearms-faq.html

    You are incorrect.
The only requirements are locks on the doors.

There are a few Class 3 weapons that can be bought on an Curio/Relic FFL., by passing the Class 3 dealer. BATF rules apply

Neal pretty much covered this. "Starting a collection" - you must have way too much cash on hand! The $200. fed fee is chump change. Aside from silencers, actual firearms start around $4K. You may get a beat-up Cobray for a little less. Check out the cost of a nice HK - they are more than I paid for my first new home in '65.
On the other hand, they have been one of the best investments that I have acquired in the last 8 years.
It's too late for me, save yourself.
