Hello,

I'm considering purchasing a Smith model 17, 6 inch barrel, blued, combat grips, full lug, no dash (not sure if these had dashes), + box and paperwork.

I'm tryng to determine what features and date of manufacture it may have based on the end label on the box:

MODEL 017
SPEC ORDER 0289
CS SB ST CT FL
Serial # BFM 6xxx

The gun has been shot several times only and has been in a vault since the purchase, The owner cannot remember when it was purchased but the box appears to be early '80's to me.

Any help on value and the features would be appreciated.

    BFM prefix is not in SCSW but looks like it would fall in 1990 or a bit before.
    I don't know what the rest of that alphabet soup on the label means, but if you want guesses...
    CS Combat Stocks
    SB Standard Blue
    ST Maybe ought to be SH for Standard Hammer. Is it?
    CT Combat Trigger. Is it?

    Hmm. SB = Square Butt?

    FL = Full Lug?

    ST = Standard Trigger?

    CT = ???????????

    I believe that the 4 digit number "0289". Is the year and Julian date that your revolver was finished, and placed in the box. Ready for shipment. I make it to be, Oct. 15, 1990.

    The revolver "feature codes" in SCSW, as follows.

    CS = Combat Stocks

    SB = Square Butt Frame

    ST = Semi-Target Trigger

    CT = Combat Trigger

    FL = Full Underlug Barrel

    Don't understand why they have 2 trigger codes?

    You can see a lot by just looking.

    Does it have a standard trigger - .265" wide and serrated
    or a combat trigger - .312" wide and smooth?

    Does it have a standard hammer - pad 5/16-3/8" wide
    or a target hammer - pad 1/2" wide?

    Can anyone weigh in on an appx value? I can't seem to find many previous sales to help out with a value range.

    The unit isn't new in box but probably the next thing closest to it.

    These were only made for a couple of years in the late 80`s or early 90`s. They were offered in Semi-Target and Target Models. Had to find today. $900.00+ my Guess. VGUN1

    Not too many of these around.

    I basically agree with VGUN.

    LNIB model 17s seems to be going for around $800.

    This particular one is a bit rarer (and IMO, full underlug is neat), so a little more would be reasonable.

    If you contact Smith with the serial number, they could probably tell you a date (or at least year) of manufacture.
