    If the marking on the side is "I.C.I."? I believe that the hull/shell is Canadaian BRITISH Imperial Chemical Industries . Also if "2/40" is a date? It would be in the second year, of W W II. This would most likely point to military usage, probably as a mortar or flare propellant.

    Have NO idea that this applies to YOUR shell, but in that time frame, I beleive there were some aircraft that used a shotgun shell type blank to start the engines- and one like that that was part of the launcher mecahnism for torpedoes on surface vessels (destroyers, PT boats, etc)

    Is it a blank cartridge? If so...

    Aircraft impulse starter sounds very reasonable. Saw one in use during a scene in "Flight of the Phoenix" movie.

    Also, research British battleship/cruiser breech applications. Our '16 inchers used a 30-06 size blank to ignite the powder bags.

    If it's not a blank, all bets are off. Joe

    Brings back some old mememories on acft starts with shotgun starters think it was camebara's british design jet. Would be part of newbe's traing to stand fire watch at start,with smoke and noise most would drop extingiter and run.tks.hedge[:D]

    Another use for similar shells was for use in Navy ship-to-ship line throwing guns.
