I know the Wehrmacht adopted the Mauser 98k in 1935. Does anyone know if the 98k was used during the Spanish Civil War ? (1936-1939)

Yes, a version made at La Corunda (?) was. The Spaish have used Mausers since before the turn of the century.

I thought the La Corunda was made in 43?

I would say that members of the condor legion had a mix of 98ks and earlier variants; but I'm just guessing.

    Anticus,

I'm not saying that no 98K ever made it down there but for the most part it was either G98(modified GEW's) and model 1893's that were used in that war. The closest to the 98K was the Standard Modell/and carbine version that was issued to to the Condor legion. The model 43 which was used to replace the original 1916 model rifles came along after that conflict was mostly decided.....sound confusing?

    P.S.

P3, that first guys avatar is just killing me..LMAO[:D][}:)]

Additionally quite a numbeer of scrubbed reciever Polish WZ29's were issued late in the conflict. there was a smattering of other stuff, but as mentioned it gets pretty hard to sort out!

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. I was especially curious if just maybe any sniper models of the K98 (certainly in small numbers) might have been used, either by Nationalists or the Germans themselves to test out their gear in combat conditions. Spain was quite a testbed for the Axis as well as the Russians, who actually did use their PE scoped Mosin Nagants in the conflict. It's interesting to speculate on an "Enemy at the Gates" scenario in Madrid.
