As these rifles were made from 1962-64, according to the Blue Book, there may be no serial number as it was not required until 1968. On some of the Nylon 66 rifles I remember the serial number on the barrel. Sorry I cannot be of more help to you.

Hello, just whent & checked mine; it is in front of rear sight on barrel (left side). Two letters (k j) = may, 1962 i think, serial# XX (way less than 100). Hope this helps, soulds like like yours could be less than 10. If so YOU LUCKY DOG!

According to my chart...The last NYLON 76 "Trailrider" manufactured was in Sept. of 1964..They were in mohawk brown and none were assigned serial numbers.. None of the 76's prior to that were assigned serial numbers either...[This message has been edited by JIM STARK (edited 02-20-2002).]

Awhile back I had some serial number questions on a Nylon 66 and a fella by the username of Antique Dr. helped me out. Get ahold of him at www.apaxenterprises.com. Maybe he has the info you are looking for. He sure helped me out.

Hello Gentlemen, I could be wrong, but is Remington not in the habit of using ser. #(pre 68)? I think I will try to contract them.

Your Nylon 76 is not serialized.Legn4, the number you are looking at is not a serial number, but an assembly number.

If you look on the top-left of the gun, just in front of the rear iron sight, you can see a two letter code. According to my research, here is what you do with the Remington .22s:

REMINGTON MONTH AND YEAR OF MANUFACTURE LETTER CODES
Letter Codes are usually located on the left side of barrel,
just above the stock line and just forward of the rear sight.

First letter is the month, second letter is the year

    Month of Manufacture
Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec
    B
    L----A---C---K
    P----O----W----D----E----R----X

    Year of Manufacture
    1959 F
    1960 G
    1961 H
    1962 J
    1963 K
    1964 L
    1965 M
    1966 N
    1967 P
    1968 R
    1969 S
    1970 T
    1971 U
    1972 W
    1973 X
    1974 Y
    1975 Z
    1976 I
    1977 O
    1978 Q
    1979 V
    1980 A
    1981 B
    1982 C
    1983 D
    1984 E
    1985 F
    1986 G
    1987 H
    1988 I
    1989 J

Please note that many rifles, particularly 22s, did not have serial numbers prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act. Remington added serial numbers in 1967 staring with 400,000. Since year codes are often duplicated, a code letter on a gun with a serial number would be later than 1967 while one without a serial number would be a year prior to 1967.

Please also note that these code letters refer to all Remington rifles including all the variations of the Nylon line. Also note that sometimes you will find 3 letters on the barrel. It is sometimes difficult to determine which of the letters apply. Best thing to do is use the serial number trick above (w/o serial # pre 67, w/serial # post 67). Then fit the letters as appropriate.
