Can there be any detrimental effects on a rifle or shotgun from storing them long term on their side rather than upright?

Not as long as you protect the side facing down from abrasion, foam, cardboard, & moisture.

No detrimental effects that I can see. I have long guns in cases or sleeves stored horizontally for years with no ill effects. There is the case that when stored vertically oil can seep into the grip area and cause wood damage, especially shotguns and lever actions.

Bore Stores makes a nice long gun storage sleeve. More padding than a gun sock and still reasonably priced. Great if you have a bunch of guns to store. I've used them for years.
