I may have a chance to go elk hunting with a buddy of mine. I'm gonna borrow his 300 WSM. I am not very familiar with this catridge. Can anybody tell me about it. Anyone own one? Thanks

I am looking at buying a new rifle for deer and black bear rifle. i was considering a Kimber in 300 wsm. Is this caliber worth the price or should I stick with the ol 30-06 Is the short mag here to stay or will it go the way of the 284 winchester

    Thank you

I shot on the rifle match team when I was in the service, we used
M1A's, we shot at some pretty good distances. I was just wondering
what's the max distance, effective range?
I use to hunt with a 308, I shot a white tail in a bean field at 400 yrds. that was the longest shot I ever made to bring down game.
But I know the 300WSM got more punch!

    thanks

Not in velocity, energy, or range. But it is a powerful 30 cal. with managable recoil and is powereful enough for anything in North America. And a wide range of manufactures chamber them. But for shere long range power the Ultra mag is much gooder.

    Shorter bolt
    Lighter weight rifle
    less expensive ammo
    ammo is more available
    not as much kick
    more effecient cartridge

    Absolutely.

My 300 WSM uses about 65 grains of powder, my 300 RUM uses about 90 grains.[:p] I can load about 110 WSMs from a 1lb of powder but only about 75 RUMs. Just a guess, but I think the WSM is a bit more accurate than the RUM - my $700.00 Savage 12BVSS matches my HS Precision 300 RUM in accuracy all day.

No doubt though, the RUM is the more powerful cartridge. Probably handles the 190 grain & above bullets a bit better at a 1,000 yd range.

The RUM can be downloaded to be a WSM, but the WSM can't be loaded up to be a RUM.

Better brass is available for the WSM but since nosler has come out with the RUM brass, that may well have changed.

I load my 300 ultra mag "down" to reduced recoil similar to, if not less than .308 with .2" 5 shot groups. If I need I can effectively load to .300 win mag (engery load) or if needed I can load to take even the largest big game in Norht America. I too have a 300 wsm and it is very effective but If you are looking for one gun to mix things up from the low .30 cal engery level to the high .30 cal level and everything between, the ultra mag is the way to go ( if the you load). bill2740,

"300WSM---any advantage over the Remington Ultra Mag?"

None worth noting unless you want to get into a very detailed analysis of both cartridges which will only serve to arrive at an ending with the same answer; not really.

If you reloaded several thousand rounds of each, you will save some money due to the amount of powder used in each cartridge comparatively. But can you accomplish the same things with both cartridges? Nope.

The RUM will handle longer and heavier bullets better than the WSM. The RUM will be just as accurate as the WSM when a rifle system is assembled correctly for accuracy and the shooter is capable of doing the job.

The rest of it doesn't matter even a little. You have to answer the question about how you intend to use the rifle and cartridge. If the WSM fulfills your needs then there is your answer. If you need the longer range and ultimately the greater amount of energy then you have to vote for the RUM. They are not interchangeable, they each have their points and the points need to fit your needs. Until you tell us what you need either cartridge for, this is as good as it gets.

    Best.
