7x57

got my daughter a model 70 7x57 and I'm gonna start reloading for it. I've done and was looking for a bit of advice. I have 100 barnes 140 gr x bullets and I was leaning towards either IMR 4350 or Win 760 powder. She will be hunting mule deer and elk

    Looks like a great start to me. I always let the rifle tell me what it likes best. I would add a cast bullet load in for cheap trigger time. Lyman 287405 150 gr is one of my favorites. Shot placement will be important on elk.

    Either one of those powders is in the optimum range for that bullet and cartridge. You could use a few different brands that are similar burn rates.

    H1000 and a 173 gr. roundnose...that's if you want to mimic the original load.

    Seriously, I run about 43 gr. of RE-17 behind a 168gr. Berger hunter. About the same with either 4350, which gives decent velocity and clean burning.

    Lately, I've bumped up to 50 gr. of H4831x behind a 168 VLD. Meters extremely well, and slow enough you won't overload the case. In my case, with a long barrel, this gives the best accuracy/velocity combination.

    IMR 4350 is all I use now with 7x57. Gives best groups with 140gr and 154 gr HDY.
    I also have several milsurps in 7x57 I shoot and use 4350 with bullets over 160 gr with moa results.

    You have a great start there, and don't hesitate to step down as far as the 120 grainers, as long as they are the Barnes X bullets, even for elk.

    Yes, shot placement is important on ANY game animal, with ANY cartridge. A 500 Whiz Bang placed in the guts is still a bad shot, and the animal will suffer more than needed. Even as low as the 120 grain Barnes-X, you can hit that elk on the shoulder if needed, and still break bone, and penetrate to the vitals.

    The powders you listed are great, for that size case.

    alright , I think we have a start on the range work. a 3 shot group at 100 went .448. 2 five shot 200 avg 1.69. barnes 140 x over 48.7 grs IMR 4350 Win large rifle primer. she fires quick with no flinch and she loves the un. I think she is ready to go huntin

    Winchester 760 and H-414 are the same powder...the 414 is usually less expensive and easier to find. Over the years I've burned a lot of it in competition and never had anything to complain about.
