SCSW says original 629 with 4" barrel came out in 1981,
    629-1 without P&R in 1982.
So, one year, two maximum for the type, but no number mentioned.

    That better, rufe?

    Reread the OP's post. There is a difference between a 629, with a 4" barrel. And a 629-4?

He covered that Rufe. No one mentioned a 629-4.

Agreed, except HC, in his original post.

I didn't know they were limited, but I have a 629 4" P&R. Kicks like a mule with the old Super X 240 gr lubaloy ammo.

Yes, it was around 1980-1982 when S&W switched most all production revolvers from P&R to non P&R.

The original 629, "NO DASH", came off the production lines in 1981. I purchased my very first handgun at the ripe old age of 16, in March of 1982. It was a 4" 629-1 in the presentation box. I paid $529.00 out the door for it. Had to put it on my dad's permit, as I was not able to have a permit in this state/county, until I was 18.
