AK47, is it a must?

I am wondering if I have to buy a AK, since the prices are going up, and do eventually want one (I think). Is it mandatory then? Do I have to now? Is it the type of gun that a gun entheusiast MUST have?

I believe that since it is perhaps the most influencial and proliferated rifle in the history of the world, it is a definite MUST. The sooner you can get one, the better the buy, as they will certainly increase in value.

It is deffinatly a "must," but you don't have to get one now. I'm sure cashes of them will be opened and sold for years to come, they are still in production in various countries in the world. There are more AK's out there than Mausers ever produced. Its the Mausers of the 20th century in my opinion. (Nobody steal that line from me, I just thought it up...)Its still in use by many contries today, so until those countries go to another rifle, they won't sell out of theirs. But I think they will always be available. Now getting an origianl Ruskie is a different story....

This brings up an interesting topic that I have discussed with my shooting friends from time to time. There ARE certain firearms every American gun nut should have in his or her collection because of their importance historically, etc. Like any list, you can argue at length about it, which is what makes it fun. In no particular order, I will mention a few that I recall we have discussed.Colt M1911Colt SAAColt cap and ball revolver of some kindColt Woodsman of some kind (Pre-War preferred)Colt Detective SpecialColt I frame (Official Police, Python, etc.)Smith & Wesson K frameSmith & Wesson .44 MagnumSmith & Wesson Chief's SpecialWinchester lever action of some kindLugerWalther PP or PPKMauser 98 of some kind (Springfield M1903 and Winchester M70 would qualify, etc.)M1 GarandColt AR-15 or cloneAK-47 typeMauser M96 "Broomhandle"Winchester Model 12Remington/Browning long recoil shotgun (M11/Auto 5, etc.)Parker, L. C. Smith, A. H. Fox, etc. quality American doublePump .22 rifle (Pre-War Winchester/Remington/Savage etc.)Auto .22 rifle (classic Remington/Browning design preferred)Pocket .25 (Browning or Colt)Ruger Standard .22 pistolObviously, if one gets into more military arms, the list can be expanded greatly, but my group thought that guns that most influenced the shooting sports and hunting fields were the most important to have in a collection. Also note that one could argue whether a Smith M10 should represent the K-frame, or a M19, etc., but I do not think with a gun like the K-rame that the particular model is so important. The design is what is so important. Sometimes the design is so associated with a particular brand that that one particualr brand should represent the design, as is the case with the Colt M1911 design. Have at it with additions and deletions.

Dude, you forgot the Ruger 10/22. That is one that every gun nut should have at least one of. That and a Swedish 6.5x55 Mauser of some sort...

It is obvious that JudgeColt has been sneaking peeks into my gun room again. Except of course that bit about Winchester lever action "of some kind." For shame! You need at least one of EVERY kind!

landis, the much touted AK47 is a minor caliber piece of mass produced junk. Better to buy a M1 carbine, you get close to the same ballistics and much more accurate.Try an M1A or a M1 Garand for a REAL rifle in a better caliber.

I have thought many times I should have an AK, so each time I went out and bought one and shortly there after sold it (I've gone through this 6-7 times but usually at least break even on the money) As Shootist3006 so accurately puts it they are just a minor caliber piece of mass produced junk ... they can be fun to shoot for 100 rounds or so, but if I'm going to take time to load up my truck with the various parifanila for an afternoon of shooting, its much more satisfying to shoot with a degree of accuracy, just hitting a "human size" targetat 1-300 yards isn't very gratifing. On the other hand a 3/8" group at 100 or a sub 1" group at 200 or even a 2" group at 300 is very satisfing! Once you figure out the abilities of your weapon, try standing at the firing line, without a sling, and see how good YOU are!Granted, the AK is a significant design but other than Combat or just Burning up ammo its a waste of space in my safe. Besides, if it ever comes to NEEDING a gun, I'd prefer to have one that I KNOW will find its target with 1 shot ... not spray & pray.Unfortunately I know what its like to get "The Fever" so when you get one, get one while the prices are still going up ... hopefully you'll see it for what it is and be able to bail out of it before they crash like so many before it have ...
