223 metal core ammo in mini 14

Lately in the ammo ads they sell "copper core" Wolf 55FMJ 223 ammo for less barrel wear. Does any one have ideas about this?Is their a differance in wear between them.Aprox how many rounds does it take to wear out a mini-14 tube? Does the Wolf stuff group alright?Thanks DD

Ammo has a jacket and a core, you have the two confused, the only thing that touches the bore is the jacket, some ammo has a copper alloy jacket, some have a steel alloy jacket, you would have to shoot 1000's of rds to beable to tell the difference in wear in the bore.

I am guessing you are asking this because you saw the SS109 ammo in .223. This comes in 2 versions steel core & lead core. Accuracy is the same with either. RG

Wolf ammo, I believe, originally came with the steel jacket with lead core. They found that shooters preferred the copper jacket because of increased wear with the steel. That is the reason they now stipulate copper jacket. As ammoguy stated wear would not be noticeable until many rd. had been fired. I, personally, would use only copper jacket.

The steel jacketed bullets are made to be fired thru guns with chromelined barrels, steel jackets will wear the threads in a steel barrel rapidly. Steel jacketed bullets and cases are cheaper to make than using copper and brass, that would be the only advantage to them.[This message has been edited by Dragunov7.62x54R (edited 09-30-2001).]
