Can anyone tell me what manufacturers made the 22 smoothbore rifles used by the Boy Scouts many years ago? I've only ever seen one but don't remember who made it. Thank you.

Are you sure it was a 22 . I know at one time there was a special lever action BB rifle with peep sights made for a special boy scout match.

I believe that Marlin made them also, called "garden" guns.

They were 22 rimfire and they used "bird shot" to shoot little clay targets launched by a foot operated thrower. I've seen pictures of the scouts shooting these and it looked like it was back in the 40's or earlier.

    Thanks for your replies.

AS I REMEMBER THEY WERE MOSSBERGS. THE GAME WAS CALLED 'MOSQUEET' OR SOMETHING LIKE IT. THERE WERE TINY CLAY BIRDS AND A SPECIALLY DESIGNED THROWER. I SHOT ONE AT SCOUT CAMP BACK IN THE 50s.

Mossberg Model 42 (1947) had a "TARGO" version with barrel mounted target thrower. A hand held thrower was also available. The rifle had a detachable end piece that appeared to be a barrel diameter muzzle brake type unit about 6 inches long. I think it was either rifled if the main barrel was smooth bored, or vice versa, but I don't recall which. Anyone?

Mossberg TARGO was 22 smoothbore, had a launcher for little bitty clay birds. There was another in TWENTY caliber called WINGO (trying to get one round for my collection) used for indoor skeet. Run a Google image search for TARGO, see if that looks familiar.
