need help understanding long and short range trajectoy and why is there a change for each and what and how does it matter i have one with 150 grain velocity 2390 muzzel energy 1902 muzzle at 100 yds short trajectory is 00 long range at 100 yds is +1.7 why is there a difference whats better to sight in at i live in heavy pine wooded area

Don't worry about numbers.Sight the 30-30 in at 100 yards and you can kill any deer in the woods.

The 30/30 is my favorite for deer hunting and when I got my first one I had the same problem you have. I learned that for the distance That I shoot (100yds or less) those balistics don't mean squat! I've shot boyh weights of bullets for many years with the same results from both. Zero your gun at 50yds for your pine thicket then shoot both bullet weights at 50 & 100yds from a bench rest and see for yourself.

Both of the other people who answered the question are correct. The theory of long and short range ballistics for a given caliber assumes this caliber is or can be effective at a longer range. The 30-30 is a wonderful woods range caliber, so if you "zero it" in at 75 to 100 yd. It will do everything you ask of it. Back to your question, 00 in the formula means point of impact on the target @ 100 yds. ("00"sugests dead on) The +1.7 shows what would happen if you sighted the cartridge to 1.7 in high @ 100yds. This is all based on a specfic caliber bullet (.30cal) at a specfic velocity (2390fps). I hope this explains it, CW

Excellent woods rifle for sure, but without question, you can lean against a tree and just as easily put a .30-30 / 170grn Flat Nose through both lungs of a Deer at 200 yards, and it'll drop just as dead in a few seconds as if you had shot him at 75 yards in the woods...
