I was checking out the cleaning supplies at Wal-Mart tonight. I noticed they had bore brushes for 7mm & 8mm, but no 7.62x39. Should I use 7 or 8?-Marcus

7.62 x 39 is actually .311 diameter by specification. 7.62 NATO (308 Winchester) is the .308 diameter that we usually call 30 Cal. For some reason, they use the .311 just like the .303 British round. The .30 caliber bore brush will work in either one. It's only .004 difference in diameter. That's about the same as a human hair. The 8mm's all use a .323 diameter bullet. The 7.65mm's and 7.7mm's all use the .311 or .315 bullets. Doesn't seem right, but that's what the spec's call for.

If the 7.65 mm uses the .311 cal. bullet then can a 7.65 mm be used in the Ruger Mini 30 which also uses the .311 cal. (also uses the .308 cal. Winchester)? Best, Robert

As long as the brush fits down the barrel with friction, you're safe. I use a 8mm on all my .30cal and up rifles. Contrary to belief, you don't need a different bore brush for every caliber you have, just one that fits snuggly in the barrel.
