SKS Synthetic Stock Replacement

I recently purchased an ATI synthetic Monte Carlo style stock for my SKS. The question I'm having is this. How in the world do you get the old wooden handguard off of the gas tube? The instructions say that there's a small rivet through the sheet metal holding the handguard on the tube, one end smaller than the other. It instructs you to use a 1/16 inch punch to pound the old rivet out from the smaller end. The only thing that I can see looks like it goes through the sheet metal, but is much larger than 1/16 of an inch. Poor eyesight does not help! Would anyone that's done this before have any suggestions? Am I seeing the right rivet? The instructions say that if the old rivet is lost, a small finishing nail can be used as a replacement. What I'm seeing is much larger than a small finishing nail. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
