If you are going to shoot off the right shoulder, you will have to use the right eye. In order to do that, you will have to squint or close the left dominant eye so that the right eye becomes dominant by default. I used an eye patch on my boys when they were little and could not close one eye.

i had the same problem way back when.......its just a matter of training your eye to do what you want it too.....if all else fails you can always put a patch over your dominant eye until its trained.......my left eye is still dominant but still shoot right......i catch myself every once in a while leaning over the stock to use my left eye.....=-)

I used to shoot 4-position competition indoor smallbore at the 50-ft range. There were a couple guys on my team that were left-eye dominant and the coaches implored them to shoot lefty. You can train your body to shoot with either hand, but you can't train your other eye to be dominant. In any case, it's always better to keep both eyes open when shooting. I'm sure that's where nunn and Kadaver are coming from with their patch advice. We used to actually put tape over the lenses on our shooting glasses of our non-dominant eye until we trained our eyes to stay open. This allows the entire face to relax and allows better focus. We always used open sights and it really made a huge difference. Blinders on the side of the shooting glasses were always a must, too, but that's beside the point.

Does anyone have help for the problem of dominate eye chamge? Due to old age or an accident my dominate eye changed from rt to left. I've been shooting for 40yrs and the change has resulted in the accuracy of my shots...its gone to heck. I try to practice at least once a week but the accuracy has not come back. HELP!

I am left eye dominate and right handed. I have trained my body to shoot left handed. Always have shot a rifle left handed but used to hold a pistol in my right hand and use my left eye. In the past 3 weeks I have changed to using my left hand for pistol. My accuracy has greatly increased. I have been shooting one handed at 50 ft. My scores for 10 rounds used to be in the mid 40's which is pretty sad, but since the switch I have jumped to the low 70's in about 400 rounds. Give shooting left handed a shot, I know that the bolt guns get expensive when you want the bolt on the other side but it is worth it.

I got a real weirdo. Its a "double". One bbl. is 16 ga. 'n the othern' is 11mm Mauser. Its canted off so bad that you can't even stand it up against the wall without it falling.Family legend has it that it was made about 1900 for a dominant left eyed, right handed shooter.People come up with more ways to skin a cat.....Bob

I, too, am left eye dominate and right handed. I have trained my myself (actually, my Dad trained me) to shoot left handed. I am very thankful that he took the time to help me with this.I shoot a rifle and shotgun left handed, and hold a pistol in my right hand and use my left eye for aiming. No problemo! Bonne Chasse!

How does a person go about telling which eye is there dominant eye? I have never really gave it any thought until I read this thread.

Here's a trick to determine which eye is dominant. I must advise that there is risk of losing something in the translation but here goes nothin'. Pick an object in the distance. While focusing on that object, extend one of your arms out and "touch" that object with your index finger. I don't mean to literally touch it but align the tip of your index finger with that object. If you are focusing on the object and not your finger, there will be two images of your finger. Close one eye and then the other. If you close the non-dominant eye, the image that remains will be aligned with the distant object which you are looking at with the eye that is open (this is your dominant eye). If you close your dominant eye, your finger is no longer aligned with that object which you are looking at with the eye that is open (this is your non-dominant eye). Theoretically, your dominant eye aligns the correct image of your finger with the distant object and wins over the wishes of the non-dominant eye to align the image of your finger that it perceives with the distant object.[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 10-06-2001).][This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 10-06-2001).]

I am left eye, right handed. Did not find out untill I started shooting trap since I always closed my left eye when shooting. I have sucessfully changed my eye dominence by wearing the maximum correction in the right eye while wearing a mid-range lense in the left. This also helps to focuse up close when reading as my left eye then takes over. It is called "mono vision" in the eye business. Best, Robert

My eye dominance is so bad I now shoot left handed. Found out in boot camp and still get expert every time!
