Mini 14 "assault rifle"?

I remember reading in another post something about manufacturing an "assault rifle" from a Mini 14 (or possibly Mini 30). What constitutes this violation? Is it simply adding a high capacity magazine on a post-ban model? I was thinking of getting one, but I'm a big believer in hi-caps, so this would definately put a damper on my plans.-Marcus

Is that a California "assault rife", a federal "assault rifle," any-other-state definition "assault rifle?" Seems every jurisdiction imaginable has felt the need to define this asinine term.Laden or unladen? What is the airspeed?

In most states it would be perfectly legal to use a high capacity magazine in any Mini-14. There are exceptions, and there are some cities which would prohibit it as well. What you want to avoid on a Mini is adding enough "qualifiers" to classify it as an assault rifle unless it was already configured as one prior to 9/94. Those qualifiers would include any two of the following:Flash supressorBayonet LugFolding stockPistol gripGrenade launcherFederally, you can add just one of those items. Adding two would be "manufacturing an assault rifle". However, if it was already configured as an assault rifle prior to 9/94, you can add additional items because it is already an assault rifle. That is to say, if it's already an assault rifle, you can't make it an assault rifle, because it already is one.

Well, since I'm in Louisiana, I think I'm safe. Were pretty easy going about guns her, thankfully. That's the only good thing about living in this s***hole.-Marcus

I put a folding stock/pistol grip on mine and a flash suppressor....but that was before 94.....so it was legal right?....
