Mauser in 284 Winchester-no machining required

CaptainCrossmanCaptainCrossman Member Posts: 1,649 ✭✭✭✭✭
edited February 2016 in Ask the Experts
just did an experiment with some Mauser sporters I own
pulled the bolt from the 264 Win Mag Mauser 98
pulled the bolt from another 8x57 Mauser 98
put the 8mm bolt in the 264 gun
loaded 3 shells of 284 Win in the 264 magazine
all 3 fed, and the bolt handle closed, and all 3 extracted/ejected
of course I did not FIRE them.
but this means:
buy a magnum mauser 98
change the bolts
and the action has the proper feed lip contour, to feed/fire/extract/eject without jamming

no machining/grinding of feed lips/ramp/magazine/follower required, other than rechamber/headspace to 284, or changing barrel/chambering, if bore size is different

Merry Christmas

ps- I didn't go to gunsmith school. just thought about it.
took about 3 minutes to figure out, if you understand the system.

IT'S SIMPLE

now I'm not a degreed gunsmith, thank God for that[:D]
but I did build a few hundred diesel and gas engines when I was a powertrain engine/trans/rear axle mechanic at my own shop, during the 1980-97 time period.
and you won't find a mis-spelled word in my posts. I don't use a spellchecker. if you get my drift.

so here's the dimensions on the feed lips for the 264, that fed 284 shells with ease

    rear of magazine .615"
forward wide section of magazine, visible grinding, dimension is .655"

that's all there is to this. really simple. you don't have to be a god or duke or emperor, or Carlos Hathcock, to take some measurements.

there is one leaf cut off the magazine follower spring, I cut that to get the 264 to feed smoothly, long time ago.

there's nothing mysterious about this. foolish to complicate it as some were doing previous. takes a little thought and common sense to simplify it. don't need to shoot a 3/8 MOA to measure it with dial calipers.

why'd I have to answer my own question ? instead I got a lecture on caliber vs. cartridge vs. chambering terminology, and a locked up thread. useless minutiae no-answer and fragile egos. but no actual dimensions or facts, or hands on info.

if you don't know how, just say so- or don't answer the question.

had to think it through myself
    for a whole 3 minutes.
measured the feed lips and did the feed/eject test in my living room.
    don't even have a shop.

    what's the big deal ?

to those of you like minded, who'd like to convert a 7x57 to a 284 win- Merry Christmas x2

to the "degreed gunsmiths" who flamed me before- have some crow. we'll drag you along kicking too, feel free to use the information. and lighten up already.

Being this was your question in the first thread...
quote:how hard is it to convert a Mauser 98 chambered in 7x57
    to 284 Winchester ?
is it as easy as just rechambering it with the reamer ?
    the magazine accepts the shells
it seems the feed lips would have to be ground down and wider to feed smoothly.
the rim of shell while smaller, is still gripped by the bolt face
anyone here done it before ?
    all replies appreciated, thanks

It had nothing to do with a magnum action or switching bolts. You wanted to know what it would take for the conversion. You were given good answers, and the proper answers. Now you want to troll, to try to mock somebody who was giving you the VERY BEST advice available?

I smell a troll, and this thread needs to be locked...Moderators.

so much for your extractor angle/feed lip/timing horror scare story
a rifle not even chambered for 284, times the round right in
    first try
didn't teach you that in gunsmith school, eh ?
what school was that, so I can stay tf away from that place...
who taught the class, Mickey Mouse ?
how many guns can you be building, if you've been emailing my house for the past 5 hours, and posting here on the net ?
    answer- none.
YOU NEVER EVEN RAN A 284 ROUND IN A CHAMBER BEFORE.
keep it up...cuz I'm taking a spare 7x57 barrel down to the local shop tomorrow, to have it chambered to 284- by real gunsmiths
they don't post on the net all day, like you "degreed gunsmiths"
    they build guns all day
then I'm going to thread it on an action myself, and shoot it.
gee, how high tech, and mysterious.
holy cripes, it's an M98, it was designed 118 years ago-
    before we had worldwide electricity
    this ain't rocket science, dude.
you're acting like a kid standing on an anthill

I take it you already have headspace gauges and a finish reamer to adjust headspace?

Since the smith will need the receiver to properly adjust shank length why not take the bolt also and have him adjust headspace?

Yep...he has headspace all right...but it has nothing to do with a firearm.

He obviously thinks this is the General forum

    Good Morning CaptainCrossman,

This just doesn't seem to be a good fit for you.

You might find much more happiness over on Mauser Central:

    http://www.mausercentral.com/forum/

There you will find all of the folks who will appreciate your candor and knowledge regarding gunsmithing and Mausers.

    Best.

    ADDED:

I apologize to 'rufe-snow' whom I am always chiding for sending our members to other forums. I broke my own and CaptKirk's rule. But in this case I felt the overall outcome would be beneficial to the forums.
