SN of Regulation Police is on the front strap of prewar guns, on the butt postwar. Fitting number under the yoke tells nothing.

SN 16500 does not compute for a M31-1

I agree with the above, we need quality photos of both revolvers. Use a small piece of duct tape to obscure the last two numbers on both revolvers. But take quality photos of all areas with numbers.

I Looked where you said on both guns and you were correct and it was 38 S&W on regulation police the serial was 7950 but it still has the 1224
in the yoke, what is that?

    On the 31-1 was m544xx

The lady that sold the gun gave me a list of the serial #s and had not a clue that they would be where you said I just took her word from paper she gave me.

    Does that help?

Not much. A .38 Regulation Police is a different thing. All I can tell from the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is that it was made sometime 1917 on.

m54000 is not a Model 31-1 serial number, either.

The number under the yoke is a fitting number, used to keep parts together at the factory. It has nothing to do with the official legal serial number, no records were kept and it tells you nothing about the age or model of the gun.

That puts it in 1971 or 1972.
