I have seen a number of 92's and 94's take downs that had the receiver pinged at the union, I guess a attempt to tighten up the union, maybe could not get the screws out or some other reason. My question is why would it be done, pinging, around the front of the receiver where the barrel screws into the receiver? I was recently looking at one at a gun show and it had several ping marks almost all the way around the front of the receiver.

Can't answer your question. But when done to machine parts, it is commonly known as staking.

It may have been done for one of several reasons. The most likely is the owner not being aware of the adjustment screws hidden behind the forend. Or, those screws may be rusted in place, or otherwise unusable. Another very uncommon reason could be that the adjustment screws, along with their drilled and tapped holes, may not exist!! I own a '94 takedown made in 1901 with exactly that situation. I've heard all the stories about how Winchester never made any mistakes, etc., but I have collected them for over 50 years and have come across many abnormalities that are obviously factory work.

I am aware of the pinging on the union of a takedown but what I am asking is why someone would ping around the receiver where the barrel screws into the receiver?

maybe they were tapping on it to try and loosen barrell for removal.

Who knows why some people do odd things. To hazard a guess, Bubba replaced the barrel, maybe the internal treads were rusted or the new barrel was cut undersize. So Bubba 'tightened' the hole by staking the perimeter, perhaps he did the threads also. None of which we can see in the pic's.
