Remington shotgun question

My neighbor wants to sell his Remington Sportsman 48 shotguns...one in 12 ga. and one 20 ga. Is the Sportsman 48 the same as an 11-48 and what's the difference?

Also, he claims that you can use a tubing cutter to make a "house gun" out of an old shotgun. I know they will cut copper pipe but steel?????

A neighbor of mine is having an estate sale for his mom and looking over there today I see two Remington shotguns. One is a model 10, the other a model 11. Both 12 guages. The wood on either is not too bad, I would rate it at 70%+. The metal on both has some rust from storage which will leave some pitting I'm sure, once cleaned. Overall bluing(original?)is 70%-80%.
He wants $250.00 each. Sorry I didn't check barrel lengths, or chokes and I know that affects value. Buy or run? TIA for opinions.

As to the tubing cutter, it will cut the barrel, but it also compresses the mouth. If the barrel is tight, you run a grave risk of growing a flower petal. Don't do it. Hacksaw or bandsaw is the way to go.

In my diminished memory, I believe the only difference is 3 and 5 shot. Just like the older model 11's.
As for the tubing cutter, I concur with P3, leave that with the plumbing tools, NOT with the gunsmithing tools.

sorry guys, I use a tubing cutter to cut a lot of barrels (nice square cut) but I do 'dress' the inside to remove the 'burr'. some realy tight choke tubes reduce 12 ga. barrel dia to 16 ga.!

I have used the tubing cutter to get a square cut by just scoring then finish with saw.tks hedge[:D]
