What is the best method to store an antique Colt cased set?
Is it best to leave the pistol and accoutrement in the box or to store them seperately outside of the box.

Many of the cases I have seen are lined in some type of fabric. Out of concern that the fabric could attract moisture, I would want to store the contents of the case OUT of the case.

why store it ? in my OPINION stored means you will never see it so i say, display it ! remove all contents, spray a very light coat of silicone on the cases' cloth/fabric, let it set a day or so then replace all contents and display it somewhere you can see it every day, your bedroom is a good place.

i have one of those early Bushmaster "Viet Nam" era commemoratives that i just screwed the case to a wall above a window in my "gun room", you would be surprised how many people who visit never sees it.., i see it every day.

I would store the gun & any steel/iron accessories in gun socks inside my humidity controlled safe. I have also had good results with a heavy plastic bag & a sheet of VPI paper.

The case should also be stored in a heat/humidity controlled area. If you have a forced hot air furnace & no humidifier, any wood will eventually be ruined by having the moisture sucked out of it.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas. I also got some info from Springfield Armory Museum and will be using a museum technique on metal parts of cased set. Renaissance Wax ( crystaline hard wax) is used to preserve guns and swords.

Here is a pix of the new toy:
