I have found a Winchester Model 1873 rifle, lever action, chambered in 38cal. 38/40, with a 27-1/2" octigon barrel, S/n is 227710B. The gun appears to be in good working order in fair to good condition. What would be a fair asking price for such a gun?

I believe all 44 WCF and 38 WCF models came with cleaning rods in the butt stock. 32 WCF and .22 cal models did not because the rods were too big for those bores and those guns lacked the trap door in the butt plate.
I concur.
Depends on the butt stock. Some 1873s were equipped with solid one piece butt plates. I believe if I remember correctly one style of butt plates were called sporting and maybe also called shotgun butt plate style. I have a 32-20 sporting rifle with this shotgun style butt plate. Also, the later 1873s' butt plates may not have come with the cleaning rods compartment - someone will probably correct me on this - again my memory.
Unless specifically ordered without the trapdoor butt & plate, all Model 1873 Rifles, Carbines, and Muskets in 44 WCF and 38 WCF were equipped with them, and with a 3, 4, or 5 piece jointed steel cleaning rod.
None of the .22 rim fire or 32 WCF Model 1873 rifles or carbines were equipped with a trapdoor & jointed cleaning rod.
