AR 300 blackout magazine

I am building an AR 300 blackout and I have been told I can use a regular AR-15 223/556 magazine... Is that correct? If so I would think that I wouldn't get 30 rounds in it.

Same mag and yes, 29 or 30'will fit...it's the same case diameter as 5.56 because the 300 case IS the 5.56

I was always under the impression. That the 300 Blackout. Was the commercial name, for J.D. Jones's cartridge. The 300 Whisper. If this is correct? It's based on the 221 Remington Fireball case. Which I believe has a case length of 35 mm. Not the 5.56 X 45.

    Production history

    Designer Remington / Wayne Leek
    Manufacturer Remington
    Produced 1963

    Specifications

    Parent case .222 Remington
Bullet diameter .224 in (5.7 mm)
Neck diameter .253 in (6.4 mm)
Shoulder diameter .361 in (9.2 mm)
Base diameter .376 in (9.6 mm)
Rim diameter .378 in (9.6 mm)
Rim thickness .045 in (1.1 mm)
Case length 1.400 in (35.6 mm)
Overall length 1.830 in (46.5 mm)
    Rifling twist 1-12"
    Primer type Small rifle

According to Remington it is based on the .222 Remington case shortened to 1.400" in length. It is indeed the commercial name for the 300 Whisper which J.D fought tooth and nail to keep proprietary but failed and gave into the masses.

Necked down to the .17 caliber it is named the 17 Mach IV and necked up the .30 caliber it was named the .30 Apache.

    Best.

Never heard of the .30 Apache previously. Surprising? I always thought Jones, was the first one out of the shute. With a 221, necked up to 30 caliber.

I suspect Mr. Jones's penchant for protecting his creations is why my Redding reloading dies are labeled "375/444 Marlin" and not "373 JDJ".

While there are 300AAC specific magazines, I've never found a problem with using common .223/5.56 mags. I haven't (nor do I expect to EVER)tried to see if 30 will fit in a magazine since my uses are for hunting

    schotzi1,

The 300 BLKOUT will fit in most standard 5.56 magazines. You might get 30 in a mag but it will depend on the design of the magazines. Yes, I know this sounds wishy-washy but that is the way of magazines, they don't all perform to the same standards.

This is the answer to anything provided by JD Jones. He felt compelled to protect everything he 'created' so the rest of the world found methods of creating work arounds.
