model 70 information

I have recently aquired a model 70 3006 that was made in 1948. It seems to be all original and is about 95%. It has not been tapped in the reciever and still has the original peep sites. It has the letter/number on the bottom of the grip R33. Does anyone know what this is. It reminds me of military markings.
