SAAMI specification pistol barrels

While researching the HK Mk23 SOCOM, I noticed HK made the civilian version to conform with SAAMI barrel specs. Any expert knows just exactly what's the difference between a military spec barrel and a SAAMI spec one? Is SAAMI spec more stringent than mil-spec? I am very curious because I had a CZ 75 military surplus gun that is not made to SAAMI spec and there isn't any difference I can tell.

Good question. I have often wondered about that. Heres what I know. SAAMI stands for the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. SAAMI publishes a variety of standards for the production and testing of arms and ammunition. SAAMI is the standards setting body for ammunition and arms manufacturers in the U.S.A. With few exceptions, all commercial published ballistic coefficient (BC) values are based on the SAAMI G1 drag coefficient table or its derivatives. I think the only diiference is that this is the US standard & HK (and other foreign manaufacturers) may or may not follow it. I beleive since military specs may be custom set by the government they must exceed SAAMI standards for most modern military applications.[This message has been edited by rg666 (edited 11-09-2001).]
