when you see a rifle model, for example aremington model 700, in many different calibers, does each caliber have to have its own bolt and receiver to function , or are the bolts and receivers all the same and just the barrels that are different.

The bolt/receive/barrel combination depends on teh cartridge size. For instance there are short action, meduim action, and long action receivers for different lengths of cartridges. Rounds like the .223, .243, & .308 only need a short action receiver. The std. length is for rounds in the .30-06 class, and long action receeivers are needed for the .300 Ultra length cartridges. Also there are different bolt diameters. The .223 and others need a small bolt face, the .243, .308, .270, .30-06, etc. need a larger bolt, and magnum calibers (with larger carttridge heads) require yet a different bolt. So, there are 'families' of cartridges that only require a different barrel (and headspacing). Hope this helps out.
