I now own a S&W model 10-5 chambered for .38 spl. Can I feed it +P ammo without harming myself or the revolver? If not, what is a good recommendation for self defense?

If the revolver is in good mechanical condition there will be no problem w/ +p loads. However, like a guns a steady diet of max power loads speeds up wear on the piece.

Practice with standard 38 ammo until your very familiar with the sight picture / impact point. Then fire enough of the +p so that you see the change in the impact point. That way you know what the difference in "hold" or sight picture will be to get the hotter ammo to the same point of impact.
