Is removing the flash hider from an AR15

as simple as turning it counterclockwise as viewed from the front? (looking down the barrel) Any tricks to know?

    Depends on how it is attached - if you have a short barrel and are using the hider to make the 16" minimum, then it is goign to be pinned and/or silver soldered on.

    Otherwise, yeah, just unscrew it.

    I've done a few. Unless the barrel is a 14.5" with pinned/welded FH in place, it should simply unscrew. Make certain you have the upper anchored well. I always use the front sight post since it's pinned to the barrel. You don't want to clamp the receiver in a vise since it, not the FH, may end up turning.
