pistol scopes

I have a 7 1/2" ruger redhawk in 454 Casull. I bought a Burris 2x7 posilock variable for it. It lasted 8 shots before going permanently out of focus. I sent it in the Burris and they remedied the problem. I remounted and the same thing happened after 10 shots. I sent back into Burris and they fixed it. I had the pistol magna-ported and remounted scope. It lasted about 15 shots before same thing happened again. Questions:
1. Would a fixed power scope be less likely to go out of focus like this?
2. Can anybody recommend a scope brand less likely to do this on a Casull? I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the Burris can't take it.
many thanks,
Chris

I use Leupold 4X on my FA M83 454s. I have had no problem with them after many many rounds. Be sure that you have a good mount & rings.
I have heard of several recent problems with Burris scopes on hard recoiling handguns. I have no personal experience with Burris handgun scopes other than with a couple of 2Xs that I had on milder revolvers in the past. I had no problem with the 2Xs.

Kind of surpised happened, they're usually pretty good. I have some on 375 JDJ, 375 H & H and 405 Winchester handguns (T/C Encore, no brake) and no issues. I'd expect a fixed power scope has fewer parts so logically that would seem to help. Maybe a fixed Leupold is the way to go?
One thing that may help - consider "scope flex" when picking a scope and mounting. A long tube scope may flex too much during recoil and damage the scope, here's a lousy rifle example, you can imagine what happens when your 454 goes off:

A short, well supported scope such as a fixed 4X may flex very little. I have long 5X and 12X Burris that I wouldn't put on anything heavy. I have some Weaver 4X and 2.5 to 8X on 45/70 & 350 Rem Mag pistols that have been around for a long time.
If I were you a phone call to Burris and ask their opinon on what is going on before giving up on that scope. I have had excellent service from them. YMMV
I have never had a problem with the Burris variable power handgun scopes. I have even had them mounted on such beasts as an XP-100R in 350 Remington Magnum. I have heard that the 460, and 500 S&W rounds are hard on any optic. It could have to do with the way your scope is mounted. Did you lap the rings for maximum true contact? Did you properly torque the ring cap screws to no more than 15 inch pounds? Burris is not one to have a lot of problems witheir stuff. I suggest you talk to someone there, and Ruger(about their rings)
Best
Try using Burris Signature Rings to compensate for any misalignment, you will see an improvement.
I had a 1.5X6 Signature fail TWICE on a 338 Winchester mag rifle. the rings were the issue, applying torque to the scope inducing the failure.
thanks again,
Chris
