Winchester Mod 21 Ejector Modification

I recently acquired a Model 21 Winchester in 20 gauge that has a modification to both of the selective ejectors. I'm curious about what their function might be.
I'll try to describe the modification...
At approximately the 8 o'clock position on the right ejector and at the 4 o'clock position on the left ejector there is a small, spring loaded metal projection (something like a miniature firing pin) extending maybe 1/32" toward the center of the chamber. Each is easily pushed in and then returns to its extended position.
These projections are expertly and meticulously installed and they do not interfere with loading, unloading or ejection of shells from the gun. Any information or experience with this modification would be appreciated.
