How to remove model 12 safety

Bought Herters lever type safety. instructions read: with safety on, gun turned up insert end of wire key (which I do not have) into small hole in the end of safety. push down compressing spring plunger and same time push on safety to jump over lock plunger. Well first off the hole in the safety only penetrates 1/2 way and no wire will push down on plunger.
Second when it says "at the same exert thumb pressure on safety" which way off safe or further thru on safe?

I assume that you have removed and disassembled the trigger group. (that's required) Depressing the detent, (spring and plunger..don't loose it !) requires a short stiff punch or something like a jewelers screwdriver with a very thin blade. Sometimes you can simply rotate the safety and slide it out of the trigger group without the use of any punch or wire.

If you aren't familure with the m-12 trigger group I suggest taking it to a gunsmith. Like XX said there is a plunger and spring under the safty that must be depressed (after taking the trigger out of the trigger guard). The hammer and trigger are both under spring tension and parts are easy to loose.

I should have said Win model 12 shotgun, but I assumed model 12 was enough. I was reluctant to remove the trigger guard assy because it looked unnecessary. A simple cross bolt push button safety, that blocks trigger travel. I inserted a stiff wire into the small hole in the safety button, and "rotated" the button. The key word here is rotate not push down as instructions stated. This rotated the cross bolt and thus moved the ball and spring plunger out from the detent of the cross bolt. Slide the safety out... slide in the new left hand model safety. Of course oil the ball and spring to aid removal and carefully remove cross bolt as not to allow ball and spring to fly off into parts unknown.
